The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport1 “Golden Era” is certainly the most ambitious personalization project ever undertaken by Bugatti: the result of two years of totally tailor-made craftsmanship, developing entirely new techniques and innovative know-how, which elevate today the brand from the automotive world to that of pure art.

In art as in any form of creation, everything is a question of emotion but also of know-how, passion and vision.

In this case, in this creation signed Bugatti, we are beyond a vision linked to the automobile. This model tells a story and signs a unique artistic imprint with an ambitious and technical vision.

We are simply talking about excellence.

RACHEL JOULIA-HELOU, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF THE AMILCAR MAGAZINE GROUP.

This project is the very embodiment of the Bugatti Bespoke offering, in which customers’ ambitious visions – which often extend well beyond the already nearly infinite levels of configuration that Bugatti offers – come to life in a collaborative process. with the design team.

In this case, that vision comes from a Bugatti customer with a deep admiration for the brand’s history and for the intricate engineering of the W16 engine. Not only did he choose a Chiron Super Sport to celebrate the legendary combustion engine, he also wanted to pay homage to the history that led to the creation of this engineering marvel. It is around this vision that the design team has crafted a proposal that can capture the essence of Bugatti – what makes the brand so special – through its most extraordinary and memorable creations. The result: the “Golden Era”.

Achim Anscheidt, former Bugatti Design Director, in charge of this project, explains the starting point of this idea: “Our customers can be incredibly creative and we are very proud to help them realize their dreams, but such singular requests that these are extremely rare – we usually don’t see more than one or two of this size each year. Given the vision and demanding nature of this project – and the fantastic concept we wanted to achieve – “Golden Era” is probably the most demanding piece of custom customization my team and I have ever worked on.

ACHIM ANSCHEIDT, FORMER DESIGN DIRECTOR OF BUGATTI

“A very important customer contacted us and during our conversations said that for him the Chiron Super Sport and its W16 engine represented a turning point in the automotive world. In this regard, he wanted to be able to celebrate this historic moment in a truly unique way. We have traveled through Bugatti’s history to identify the most significant moments, and in particular the era of Ettore, Jean and Roland Bugatti, the brand’s first golden age. And then, of course, we were interested in the contemporary icons which, from 1987, embodied the modern era of Bugatti. We proposed a concept, where 45 sketches representing the brand’s most emblematic vehicles would be drawn by hand directly on the body. The owner immediately loved the idea!

The customer himself has a high regard for Bugatti, and this collaboration with our designers – during which he paid countless visits to the team to participate in the evolution of the project and to see his vision come to life – was marked by his overflowing passion. Privileged point of contact between the customer and the Bugatti teams, the Bugatti partner in Greenwich, Connecticut supported the owner throughout the project.

Hendrik Malinowski, Managing Director of Bugatti, said: “Our Bespoke offering is based on a fully customer-focused approach to ultra-luxury car design. This is what makes this offer truly unique. Our teams first work hand in hand with our customers to imagine together what they want precisely, then they work closely together for months, even years, to transform this project into reality. Every step, every decision and – in the case of the “Golden Era” – every stroke of the pen, has been carried out with the active participation of the owner and with the aim of exceeding their expectations in a way that no other brand could. »

HENDRIK MALINOWSKI, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF BUGATTI

The overall project captures Bugatti’s unmistakable heritage, a story told through a composition of beautifully intricate designs illustrating each of the legendary brand’s key milestones. On the passenger side, 26 hand-drawn sketches highlight iconic vehicles like the Type 41 Royale – named the most luxurious car of all time when it was released in 1926 – and the Type 57 SC Atlantic – widely regarded as the most beautiful car ever made. A celebration of the times when Bugatti changed the course of automotive history with its innovations. On the driver’s side, 19 drawings depict the revival of the brand since 1987 and the unfailing success that Bugatti has enjoyed since the EB110, including the Veyron and the Chiron 2.. A stark illustration of the 3,712 parts that come together to create the legendary W16 engine – the most advanced automotive engine ever built – also takes its rightful place in this masterpiece.

The team tweaked and perfected each design until it achieved precisely the right scale, proportions and shape and integrated with the others to form a beautiful work of art. But every work of art needs a canvas to stand out. For this project, a timeless and festive shade called “Doré” was specially created. At the front of the vehicle this hue blends into a metallic version of Bugatti’s ‘Nocturne Black’, creating the perfect canvas, one on which designers can begin the daunting stage of drawing, right in the vehicle.

Achim Anscheidt continues: “It was very clear to us from the start that we could only achieve a realistic result if we used the pencils that we usually use to draw on paper. At Bugatti authenticity is paramount and for us it was a prerequisite. Any other technique risked giving a result that looks fake or shoddy. That’s why we had to find a process that would allow us to use these pencils and do all the drawing by hand, right on the vehicle. »

ACHIM ANSCHEIDT

Of course, even for the most experienced and skilled designer, the task of drawing only by hand, on a customer’s hypercar, is extremely disconcerting. From the first stroke of the pen, this meticulous process and quest for perfection allowed the talented designers at Bugatti to elevate their craft even further. Inevitably, this process took a long time and resulted in a few setbacks along the way, but with great passion, lots of testing and constant learning, the team was finally able to develop a new technique to achieve the desired finish and finally complete the final drawing, the last milestone of this work of art. In total, this complex step required more than 400 hours of work.

Offering a complete and immersive creation, the design team has extended its work into the interior cabin. On each of the door panels, three vehicles that have marked the history of Bugatti have been painted by hand with a special ink and a fine brush allowing the designer to draw directly on the leather. The EB110, the Veyron and the Chiron, modern legends that adorn the driver’s side face the icons of the past from which they were inspired: the Type 35 – the greatest racing car in the world – the Type 57 SC Atlantic – the most beautiful car ever created – and the Type 41 Royale – universally recognized as the most luxurious car ever imagined. “Golden Era” or when Bugatti’s innovative past meets its revolutionary future in a car that symbolizes the quintessence of the brand’s know-how. New manufacturing methods and finishing processes have been devised to enable these designs to stand the test of time. Other subtle details proudly adorn the interior of the Chiron Super Sport, such as the “Golden Era” signature stitched on the headrests and the “One-of-One” inscription.

A timeless and resolutely incomparable tribute to the defining moments of Bugatti’s history, the Chiron Super Sport “Golden Era” is without comparison possible for its unprecedented level of personalisation; a project that could only be born from the minds of true enthusiasts, and which could only be completed with a level of detail as perfect as by the craftsmen of Molsheim.
The vehicle is now awaiting an official handover to its owner during Monterey Car Week in California.
